The Call — A Blocked Drain That Kept Coming Back
The homeowner had dealt with this drain before. It had blocked, been cleared, and then slowly became a problem again. That pattern — a drain that clears but keeps returning — is almost always a sign that something structural is wrong with the pipe itself, not just a one-off blockage.
We attended to unblock the drain and immediately started looking beyond the symptom. If we clear it and leave, it blocks again. The only way to stop the cycle is to find out why it keeps happening.
The Evidence — A Cracked Pipe
What we found explained everything. A section of the drain line had a significant crack through the pipe body at the fitting junction. The photo below shows the damaged pipe after excavation — the crack is clearly visible running around the circumference where the fitting meets the pipe.
Once a drain pipe cracks — whether from ground movement, tree root pressure, age, or a poorly made joint — it opens an entry point that tree roots find immediately. Roots follow moisture, and a cracked drain pipe is a constant source of it. Once inside, roots grow and fill the pipe, blocking flow. You clear the roots, but the crack remains. Roots return. The cycle repeats.
If your drain blocks repeatedly — even after being cleared — the pipe itself is likely damaged. Jetting or snaking removes the roots but leaves the entry point open. A cracked or broken pipe needs to be repaired or replaced to break the cycle permanently.
The Fix — Excavation and Drain Line Renewal
With a cracked pipe confirmed, the correct repair is excavation and renewal of the damaged section. There's no patching a crack like this — the pipe needs to come out and be replaced with new PVC laid correctly and properly jointed.
The photos above show the excavation at the repair site. The left image shows the pit opened up with the new PVC pipe going in — you can see water from the damaged pipe pooling in the base of the excavation, which confirms the pipe had been leaking into the surrounding soil. The right image shows the new pipe laid in position alongside the removed section.

Located the cracked pipe section at the fitting junction — the root entry point confirmed. Excavation required.
Dug down to expose the full length of the cracked pipe. Water pooling at the base of the excavation confirmed the extent of leakage into surrounding soil.
Damaged pipe removed completely. New PVC drain pipe laid to correct fall, all joints properly solvent-welded, bedded correctly in the trench.
Trench backfilled and compacted. Drain tested at all fixtures — full flow, no backup. Job done permanently.
